Light rain started to fall as Chitto drove north on Highway 69. Trees, shrubs and grasses melted into that shade of wet nature assumes when it receives a long-awaited reprieve. Seeing other headlights reflecting off the puddled highway, he made sure his were on, too.

He rolled down the window to feel the rain on his face. On the chance he might encounter someone from the bureau—someone by the name of Ramon Rodriquez—he opted to drive his truck and dress casual. He checked his rearview mirror often, looking for a black SUV dogging his tracks. The only vehicle dogging him was a beat-up Ford pickup looking like it had been rescued from a junk yard. The right lamp on the truck wobbled like a bobble-head doll. Two people were visible in the cab.

Deciding Rodriquez wouldn’t be caught dead in the wreck, he gave the Ford a last glance.

Chitto reproached himself for being paranoid. The FBI might not like him running his own investigation but it didn’t have resources to put a tail on him. Still, he considered, Rodriquez wasn’t your five-and-dime FBI agent. If he had been a member of a gang down on the Rio, his temperament might make him act unpredictably.

Like hassle a smart-aleck tribal cop who dissed him.

Sighing, Chitto turned his attention to the day he had planned before Sunday rearranged his schedule. Wanda had pulled together the things he requested. All of it was on his desk now, waiting for him to put together pieces to the puzzle that had taken over his life.

A crack of thunder and darkening sky caused him to roll up his glass. He wiped his face dry with the sleeve of his shirt, thinking the advance preparation would go to waste unless the interview with the Carter woman didn’t take that long. The following day was definitely out because he was expected at his mother’s house. He had already pissed Wanda off, maybe Rona. He didn’t need his mother mad at him, too.

Should have gone by the office and picked up that food, he thought now. He would apologize on Monday morning. Old and set in her ways as she was, Wanda was going out of her way to help him.

Pelting rain and disappearing highway lines driving all else from his mind, he focused on the tail lights of the car ahead of him.
